Theory

In electrical and electronic engineering, a clamp on current transformer is an electrical device with jaws which open to allow clamping around an electrical conductor. This allows measurement of the current in a conductor without the need to make physical contact with it, or to disconnect it for insertion through the probe. Clamp on current transformer are typically used to read the magnitude of alternating current (AC) and, with additional instrumentation, the phase and waveform can also be measured. Some clamps meters can measure currents of 1000 A and more.

Applications

The round jaw design on the Q110 AC clamp on current transformer along with the high content nickel metal core makes them well suited for power quality applications where high accuracy and low phase shift along with wide frequency are important. Measurement range is 1mA to 3000A.

This industrial-style clamp on current transformer has a BNC connector and can be used with a shrouded banana plug adapter so it can be used on digital multimeters, TekMeter, and oscilloscopes. The P50 can measure AC currents from 1 mA to 3000 A peak over a frequency range of 5 Hz to 30 MHz. It provides a 1 mV, 10 mV, or 100 mV output for each Amp measured.
The Q110 clamp on current transformer is a general purpose 1000A AC current clamp designed for use with DMMs, loggers and other instruments that have a current input. It has a 1000:1 ratio and output of 1mA per amp or 1mV per amp measured in the jaw. The Q110 has an integral 2.5m lead terminated. The rounded jaw design on this current probe makes it well-suited for power applications where high accuracy 0.1% and low phase shift and wide frequency response are important.
